If the Avanti is a-Rockin'...

As Cookie and Felix stumble out of ElMo with their dates, the Sardelli twins, only one question is on their giddy lips: which couple gets the back seat first?

Hats Off to You, Darlings!

Norma, Cookie and Felix take a day trip from the home and wish you all a Marvy Weekend! And our favorite expatriate scamp makes a cameo appearance as we all play "Where's Muscato?"

From WHAT MAKES THE PIE SHOP TICK?

Avanti!

One hopes that there was enough Rumaki, Hot Crab Dunk and Swedish Meatballs for the crowd at Cookie's last cocktail party to soak up the Manhattans and Daquiris - the last time, Norma got so stoned, she drove the damn Avanti into the pool. The car turned out all right, but Norma's gold lame sheath rusted as green as the Parsley-Roquefort Cheese Balls she always brings to every party.

Always. To every party.

From THE HAIR HALL OF FAME!

Where No Hair Has Gone Before

Inspired by Ask The Cool Cookie's recent invitation for us to join his new venture, The Hair Hall of Fame, we present for your enjoyment our absolute favorite hairhopper look: mid-late period Jayne Mansfield.

Specifically, we're speaking of 1964-1966 Jayne, a period in which she was still clinging to the vestiges of mainstream stardom (touring in stock companies of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Bus Stop, and still making appearances on major television programs like What's My Line? and The Tonight Show) while slipping precipitously down the rabbit hole of Primitive Love (1964) and Las Vegas Hillbillys (1966). This yin-and-yang was reflected in her coiffure choices: her favored look of bangs, and a sideswept bouffant fall (sometimes with a variation on the ponytail switch) was more avant-garde than her classic bombshell look of the 1950's and early 1960's; began taking embryonic form around 1962-3; and was not yet quite as tattered as her look from her final year on this mortal coil. Jayne, vintage 1967, is not for the faint-hearted.

Classic JAYNE MANSFIELD, and as close to classy as she got.

Circa 1962: the beginnings of the bouffant glory to come.

JAYNE '67: Tangerine Dream, or Neon Nightmare?

Jayne's 1964-66 look often incorporated bows, one of her favorite hair accessories:

And, for a swank gig at New York's Latin Quarter, simple, classic pearls made an appearance:

I guess that's the mark of a big ol' 'mo: instead of being fascinated by Jayne Mansfield's boobs, we're utterly obsessed with her hair. We live to love it, and her, more each day.

While We're Away

Felix, Cookie and Norma are helping us celebrate Our Birthday today.

Don't mess with 'em - they'd rather fight than give up that beehive switch.

Update

No matter how harmless they may look, do not - we repeat, do not - give Felix, Cookie and Norma a lift.

Latest Sighting...

...of Felix, Cookie and Norma:
going undercover at the Dissatisfied Dipsomaniacal Republican Housewives Convention.

Update!

FelixInHollywood, Ask The Cool Cookie, and normadesmond have kidnapped Dorothy Kilgallen, Steve Allen and Arlene Francis, and have permanently ensconced themselves on the award-winning What's My Line? panel (keeping Bennett Cerf around to play dominatrix games with). They have also, unfortunately, taken possession of Jayne Meadows's wardrobe.

And So We're Back From Outer Space...

...and not a moment too soon! The flight was murder, although we did have a faboo traveling outfit, n'est-ce pas? We hurried back - FelixInHollywood, askthecoolcookie and normadesmond, as much as we love the darlings, have a tendency to run up the phone bill with late night calls to 1-800-Manmate, empty out our good liquor, and utterly exhaust the houseboys. Paolo and Sven are patient souls, but wouldn't your patience be taxed by normadesmond ringing the buzzer at two in the morning, every morning, demanding to be bathed in asses' milk? And poor Paolo's English isn't the best, so the sweet thing thought - well, let's just say that he tried.

While TJB's away, Felix, Cookie and Norma will play!

Confidentially, we'll have to have the entire place redecorated - we're sure that the old dear meant well, but normadesmond's "taste" in artwork doesn't entirely mesh with our decor; although we'll probably have to dig the damn thing out of the closet every time the bitch comes to visit.

He IS big: normadesmond adds his inimitable stamp to our humble abode.

We're also going to have a word with askthecoolcookie about surreptiously using the car to cruise the train depots. And, waaaait a minute... that bitch stole our headscarf, too!

He can do a few tricks, some old and then some new tricks: askthecoolcookie is very versatile.

Still, when all is said and done, they kept this place running like clockwork - which is no mean feat, considering that they were basically running on cylcamate and dolls, judging by the pile of empty Tab bottles outside of FelixInHollywood's guest bedroom. Not to mention the pile of houseboys.

After rummaging through our jewelry box, FelixInHollywood helps himself to a drinkie.

And, so, we bid a fond adieu to our Guest Editors; since we're still emptying out ashtrays, throwing out empty vodka bottles, and reviving houseboys, we asked Thombeau to escort our trio out. So long, girls! Thanks for everything. We'll send you the doctor's bill for the houseboys shots.

FelixInHollywood, askthecoolcookie, normadesmond and Thombeau: girls about town, and on the lam.

* Of course, we jest! We're thrilled that FelixInHollywood, askthecoolcookie and normadesmond not only agreed to be our guests, but also did such a fabulous job of it! We hope that this inspires you to visit their blogs daily, as well - after you visit Stirred, Straight Up, with a Twist, of course. Thank you, boys!

Do You Believe in Magic?

We'd like to thank askthecoolcookie for supplying us with a little Cookie Magic! Tail fins, hairhoppers, pulp rags - he certainly knows how to push all of our buttons! Stay tuned for the last of our Guest Editors tomorrow, the faboo normadesmond, who is undoubtedly getting ready for his closeup at this very minute.

1962: The Cute Factor

Well, the point has been raised that on SSUWAT its always 1962, so I am showing you what I was up too in 1962.

That's me - not in the dark sweater - I'm the baby that looks like an old man being held by my Aunt Evy. She of the fabulous hair do - Aunt Evy (who later showed up in Cleveland claiming that she had always been Aunt Lynn, never Aunt Evy) was from Miami Beach, and later Bel Air was a hoot. Her first husband (my Uncle Chet) was singer and a dancer and had appeared in first traveling company of Guys and Dolls. Her second husband was his my Uncle Lou, a man who married two of my father's sisters.

Anyway in 1962-3 I was being passed from person to person, family member to family member. Sometimes it was the father's people (the Jews) and sometimes it was my mother's people (the Methodists and hog farmers to boot). I grew up not knowing who's who and what's what. But I made it, and that bizarre upbringing has given me a unique perspective on life.

But just look at those bags under my eyes! Well, I was a colicky baby (that's turned into a colicky adult) and a night of good sleep was never mine to be had. So my mother poured this chalky stuff by the name of Petrogalor down my throat hoping it would put the kid out.

It didn't.

Not even Ambien works for me.

But then NBC did a wonderful thing! They put Jay Leno on at 10PM, and that works like a charm. Five minutes of Jay and I am buzz saw bound. But, I have these dreams of being chased by a man with a Hapsburg Jaw...

Anyway, I would love for each of you to clicky on the linky below and come visit Doing Hard Time in Shaker Heights. The content is a bit eclectic, a bit like me. Really, do stop by and I've even take the plastic off the furniture - and I don't do that for just anyone.

And TJB, you are the best. This has been fun and I promise that in February, you can come play in my world and make it your own for a day, too! Hugs!

Sleep tight tonight!
